A much needed break…

Pet Portraits by Kyla will be taking a break from custom portrait orders until May 2017.

During this time, I will be producing some personal artwork, pursuing professional development opportunities, and trying new ideas.

If you have an order with me already, I will still be creating, don’t worry.

If you are an interested client, and would like to join a waiting list for when I return to custom orders, please let me know!

Thank you!

Palouse Plein Air Competition 2015

I had so much fun participating in the Palouse Plein Air Competition this September in Moscow, Idaho!

I spent one week painting around the Palouse area where I live, and then submitted three paintings into the competition. Participating in this event really made me realize a love of painting plein air!! I want to continue painting outdoors, when the weather isn’t freezing!

My first painting was outside of the Palouse Trading warehouse in Palouse, WA. I did a project for them in early September at their warehouse, so I felt this was a perfect location for my first plein air! It was a quick painting, I worked until the evening, so had only an hour of sunlight. If you’re interested in learning more about Palouse Trading, visit them here: http://www.palousebrand.com/

The second painting I completed was of my favorite coffeeshop, Roost here in Pullman, WA. They are a small rustic coffeeshop with great coffee, homemade food and flavored syrups. I am a huge coffee lover, so this was for sure my ideal painting. It took about 3 hours, the weather was beautiful and the leaves had just started to fall. This artwork won the City of Moscow Purchase Award too! I am thankful for the opportunity for the City of Moscow, Id to own a piece of my artwork and to receive this award. https://www.facebook.com/RoostCoffeePullman

My final painting was done at the Architects of Air Pentalum Exhibit that the Washington State University Student Entertainment Board brought to campus. These are inflatable structures of light that you can walk through. They are just simply amazing! http://www.architects-of-air.com/

Be Square 2015 – Lewiston, Idaho

Recently, I participated in the Fourth Wall Art Gallery’s art challenge “Be Square”. I completed 12 paintings that are currently showing at the gallery in Lewiston, Idaho until December 18th for only $30 each! You can also order calendars from the gallery!

If you are interested in a calendar for $30, please contact the gallery at:

  • The Fourth Wall Art Studio and Gallery
  • 832 Main Street Lewiston, Idaho
  • (208) 743-9999

The Fourth Wall Art Gallery had a preview reception on Friday November 27th, then a large sale event the next day on Small Business Saturday November 28th. I did not attend because of the weather, it was very foggy and frosty/icy! I did not want to be driving in it.

I took a different turn on these art pieces. One half of the set was floral design paintings. I worked in a floral shop for 5 years through high school and early college. I miss it so much!! The other half, I explored quilt squares. Kyla Lakin - Be Square 2015

Nanea #2

This is the second portrait I have made of this sweet golden retriever Nanea 🙂 I delivered her painting a few weeks ago, and have been constantly working on many other projects (including Christmas orders!) since my last post. More to come soon. 🙂

Remembering Sawyer today 3/4/11-9/5/14

Today is a difficult day for me (even though I just got accepted into an art show!).

One year ago today, we had to help our family pup Sawyer cross the rainbow bridge. He was so young and the circumstances were terrible, but while I miss him so much, he is at peace now and doesn’t not have to deal with the restrictions and discrimination he faced. I am sure he is sprinting around, eating apples and bananas, stealing socks off people’s feet and chasing his indestructible kong ball (the only thing he couldn’t destroy). He had many nicknames including Soy, Soybean, and Monkey. He was a pillow stealer and bed hog; he would go to bed by your feet, but in the morning he would be spooning you and sharing your pillow. Miss you Sawyer! You will always be my protector and best friend and I learned so much from you sweet boy. Enjoy these photos of him and some artwork I made of him for my Senior BFA Exhibit in May for my degree.
